Michael Geddes is known as the premier guitar teacher in the
Shenandoah Valley. Currently teaching at Eastern Mennonite University, and in
his private studio at his home in Massanutten VA.
He began teaching at the age of 14 in his mother’s music store in
Winsted, Connecticut. As Michael matured, he studied with world renowned guitar teachers
such as Manuel Lopes Ramos in Mexico City, and Andrew Caponigro in Boston,
Mass. The "Michael Geddes Comprehensive Guitar Method" was developed by
Michael, combining the best of his teachers' methods as well as 30 years of his own
teaching experience. This method includes teaching the guitar as a true
intrument and understanding the guitar in its more relaxed / fun social
context.
Weekly lessons include exercising right and left hand positions,
reading music, understanding simple and complex rhythms, basic theory,
writing music, song writing, and performing. The Comprehensive Method gives
students a substantial background and knowledge of the guitar and music in
general, allowing students to follow any musical direction they choose.
Michael teaches all age groups from very young to adults. Many of his
students have continued on to major in music or become accomplished
guitarists / musicians.
In the summer of 1999 Michael traveled back to the Hartt School of Music to
study the Suzuki method of teaching. Combining this method with "The
Comprehensive Guitar Method" gives prospective students one more reason to
study with one of Virginia's outstanding guitar teachers.
Michael teaches year round at his private studio in Massanutten, VA.
and at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, VA.
